Following his studies at the Paris Conservatory, Ibert served in the navy during World War I. The piece finalizes in a great frenzy with a heroic chromatic rush to the end. Jacques Ibert is best known for his successful symphonic suite Escales (Ports of Call) and the present Flute Concerto, but he also wrote operas, ballets, vocal pieces, chamber music, and many more orchestral works. While a student at the Paris Conservatoire he won its top prize, and also won the Prix de Rome on his first attempt, despite having his studies interrupted by his service in World War I. There is a demanding and challenging cadenza in the middle of the Allegro, and the flutists must play exactly together in this cadenza. Program Notes French composer Jacques Franois Antoine Ibert (AugFebruary 5, 1962) studied music from an early age. The flutes come in with a reoccuring staccato melody. The third movement starts almost immediately after the second movement ends. The second movement is the shortest of the three and begins with a low melody by each flutist, and comes to a high but soft ending. It begins with a long introduction by the piano or orchestra, and mixes incredible chromatic passages in unison along with melodic content. His Concerto for Two Flutes is a demanding piece for both flutists. Following in his father’s footsteps, Franz Doppler became a composer as well as a flutist, and he performed in many theaters and eventually was the pricipal flute of the Court Opera. Their father was an oboist at the Warsaw Opera and also a composer. Franz Doppler and his brother were born into a musical life and both pursued careers in music.
